History

A total of 14 founding members established the “Golf and Country Club Achensee” on May 4, 1934, and on June 18, 1934, the course was officially opened with 9 holes. Thus, it is the oldest golf club in Tyrol and also one of the first clubs in Austria. Since its renovation in 1995 and expansion in 2003, the golfer has had access to 18 holes, and in 2015, the fully covered driving range with a spacious practice area was newly opened. Another highlight was being voted the best golf club in Austria in 2010. In 2013, the GLC Achensee was also included in the prestigious group of “Leading Golf Courses.”

  • 1930
Dr. Leopold von Pasquali was the golf pioneer at Achensee and in Tirol as a whole. In 1930, he observed the Archbishop of Canterbury as he used a club to hit a ball on the cow pastures. The guest willingly provided information about the peculiar game, and Pasquali saw an opportunity for tourism and the hotel industry at Achensee. The construction of the golf course was delayed for several months due to the challenging issue of land ownership, resulting in the project beginning only in the autumn of 1930.
  • 1931 – 1932

The construction work resumed in 1931, and as a result, the club was able to commence operations in 1932.

  • 1934

On May 4, 1934, the moment finally arrived. A total of 14 founding members established the Golf & Country Club Achensee, committing themselves to contribute an annual fee of 5 Schilling (!) for life. The course was officially opened on June 18, 1934. Dr. Leopold von Pasquali became the first president.

  • 1937

Six fairways traversed cow pastures, resulting in recurring issues with the local farmers. In 1937, the Austrian Golf Association (ÖGV) conducted an inspection of the course to determine if it met the required standards. However, even the president of the ÖGV, none other than Heinrich von Kuh himself, was unable to convince the farmers to relocate their cows despite personally attending the inspection.

  • 1939

The outbreak of the Second World War brought a temporary halt to the operations of the Golf & Country Club Achensee.

  • 1945

After the war, the golf operations resumed relatively early.

  • 1969

Alfred A. Hartmann succeeded Dr. Leopold Pasquali as the president.

  • 1973

The legendary figure Pasquali passed away after 25 years of steering the destiny of the club.

  • 1980

In the 1980s, Hartmann was able to create new fairways and a new driving range. In 1989, following Hartmann’s resignation, Ing. Franz Müller assumed the position of president.

  • 1993

After four years of negotiations involving approximately 40 authorities and stakeholders, as well as 28 grazing rights holders, the construction of 9 fairways with 18 greens and 36 tee boxes could commence. This concept was designed by architects Bechler and Feldmeier. With two greens per fairway, the Golf & Country Club Achensee became not only the first in Austria but also the second in Europe and the sixth worldwide to adopt this design.

  • 1995

The new course was inaugurated during a delayed 60th-anniversary celebration.

  • 2004

However, the residents of Pertisau desired more. In 2004, the Golf and Country Club Achensee successfully expanded the course to 18 holes.

  • 2007

In 2007, the new clubhouse was opened, featuring all the necessary facilities such as changing rooms, showers, caddy room, garage, reception and secretariat, pro shop, and a fully-equipped gastronomy area.

  • 2008

To complete the entire 18-hole golf course, it was necessary to construct a halfway house with restroom facilities, shelter, a beverage vending machine, and provisions for refreshments. The construction was completed in 2008.

  • 2010

At the Golfrevue Awards in 2010, the Golf & Country Club Achensee was voted the best golf club in Austria. In 2011 and 2012, it achieved the distinction of being the third-best golf club in the country.

  • 2013

The Golf & Country Club Achensee was included in the prestigious circle of Leading Golf Courses. Mag. Martin Tschoner and his team were elected as the new board members of GLC Achensee. After 24 years of presidency, Ing. Franz Müller was appointed as an honorary president.

  • 2022

The practice area on the driving range was renovated, resulting in the opening of the new short game area. This area offers a variety of practice options, including the inclusion of pot bunkers for enhanced training opportunities.

  • 2023

The adapted tee boxes, fairways, and greens of Holes 1 and 18 were reopened.

  • Until Today

It is remarkable that in the nearly 90-year history of the Golf & Country Club Achensee, there have been only four presidents and three financial officers who served voluntarily.
